“There are no stars so lovely as Edinburgh street-lamps” is a quote from one of Edinburgh’s most famous sons – Robert Louis Stevenson. The author of ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ knew what he was talking about. With its mighty castle, historic city centre and huge number of attractions Edinburgh is a true gem of a city, offering a fairy tale setting and a unique atmosphere which gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995.
Add whisky into the mix and you have all the makings of a perfect holiday. Whisky buffs can lose themselves in the highly-acclaimed, well-stocked merchant shops that also offer fantastic tastings or visit the Scotch Whisky Experience, a five star visitor attraction with tours, a shop and a restaurant. And then there is the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the world’s most entertaining whisky club and a real Edinburgh institution and the city’s latest addition – Holyrood Distillery. The distillery opened in 2019 and is set within a 180-year-old building right next to Holyrood Park and within easy walking distance of the city centre. Although it doesn’t have its own whisky yet, the distillery does make its own gin and liqueurs, and there are a number of whisky tours and masterclasses to choose from.
